there cap hit is there cap hit it doesnt change there salary is the only thing that changes And if your team has 2M in cap space, at the deadline, you can fit a 6M dollar player in to your roster. However, if that player has another year under contract, it is on you to ensure that he fits under that season's cap number Ohh ok now that makes more sense and is alot less complicated. What if a player is traded multiple times at the deadline? lol.

not enough time would pass to truly make any changes in the remaining salary/cap hit

OK, so you can only trade a player you acquired at the TDL once. If we don't do that, there is a loophole where GMs can trade with each other back and forth to lower the cap hits of players.
